Non-Radioactive Shakedown Testing of a Glove Box Vitrification System

Nitric acid dissolution processes are typically used at the Plutonium Facility (TA-55) at LosrnAlamos National Laboratory (LANL) for plutonium recovery. These solutions are passed through variousrnion exchange media to recover actinides. Effluents from the ion exchange columns are sent to anrnevaporator for concentration. The bottoms from the evaporator (EVB) are sampled and analyzed, then sentrnto another glove box for treatment using Portland cement. During routine operations, the volume of EVBrnprocessed is in the range of 30 to 50 L per 55-gal. drum of cement.rnThe primary components of a glove box vitrification system are currently undergoing shakedown andrndemonstration testing using surrogate materials. This poster identified the major subsystems associatedrnwith vitrification unit, and provides results to-date on processing parameters and equipment performance.rnThe glove box system is scheduled to be installed and operational in 2nd quarter FY 2004. The system willrnincrease the volume of EVB that can be treated in a 55-gal. drum by at least a factor of 4, or 120 to 200 Lrnper 55-gal. drum.
