Electric vehicles (EVs) could offer a solution for improving air quality as an alternative clean transportation. After the 30 years development of modern EVs, they can be produced affordably in the quite modest volumes now. But one main obstacle to commercialize EVs in the large volumes is their much shorter driving range than the internal consumption engine vehicles (ICEV). To help the driver of EVs to find a charging station before the run-out of battery energy and avoid the jam in heavy traffic roads, the navigation systems can be applied to find the charger stations easily and plan energy efficient routes for the EV drivers. Two typical navigation techniques, GPS navigation and local information navigation, are being developed for vehicles. In this paper, the latest development and applications of the advanced GPS navigation and local information navigation systems will be introduced in details. It is shown that the advanced navigation system based on GPS will be widely applied in EVs in the near future in order to enhance EV acceptability.
