This paper proposes a fuzzy-logic charging controller for lead/acid traction batteries, which consists of a fuzzy rule base. In our design, we do not try to get the accurate control output. Instead, it is proposed to identify how proper the present charging current is by observing the terminal characteristics. Specifically, unlike ordinary chargers, the proposed charger uses the percentage adjustment as its output. This feature makes the charger achieve more flexible adjustment and higher charge efficiency. In addition, the presented charger uses easily obtained parameters as its control inputs, which reduces the difficulty of measurement and estimation. The controller was implemented in TMS320C40 and the actual operation results reveal that the charger achieves its design goal. Although the presented controller is originally designed for lead/acid batteries, it can be extended to other chemistry batteries.
