A method to determine a fast mode based on edge detection for HEVC intra coding comprises: a step where an image processing device determines candidate modes based on the direction information about the edge pixel in a boundary area of a prediction unit (PU) in a block or a variation of the boundary area; a step where the image processing device determines a highest probability mode using the mode of the neighboring block to the block; and a step where the image processing device determines the final mode through comparison between the candidate modes and the highest probability mode.
