Development of a High-Power Lithium-ion Battery for Parallel HEVs

This paper describes the research and development of a high specific power lithium-ion battery for parallel hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). A basic study was first made of the potential for improving the specific power of the lithium-ion battery on the basis of numerical calculations. To verify that potential, a prototype of a high specific power lithium-ion cell designed for PHEV application was fabricated and evaluated. The cell provides around ten times the specific power of conventional batteries and also achieves high recharging performance and high charge and discharge efficiency. Evaluation results show that it is a highly promising battery system for PHEVs.
