Easy-to-clean and antimicrobial coatings can be a strategy to facilitate the cleaning and disinfection of production equipment in the food industry. They can reduce the number of cleaning cycles and cleaning products and the adhesion of bacteria and biofilms. Easy-to-clean coatings are used in diverse applications where fouling needs to be avoided. For food producing companies, special attention needs to be paid to the food safety of these coatings. But also aspects like overdosing of biocides, durability of the coating, reapplying on the coatings on existing equipment etc. play an important role in the implementation of these coatings in the food industry. In this presentation an overview and benchmarking analysis study is shown of existing commercial and innovative (e.g. superhydrophobic) easy-to-clean coatings that can be used in contact with food.
