It is well known that smart coatings make smart products. One of the effective ways to obtain smart coatings is incorporation of multifunctional, smart fillers to polymer matrix. The effect of multifunctional fillers on final properties of polymer composites will be presented based on the following types of fillers: 1. Non-functionalised and functionalised silica nano-spheres 2. Inorganic fillers applied for silicone ceramisable rubber Using synergy of very rich silicon compounds chemistry and the possibility of precise steering of sol-gel process original methods of manufacturing silica nano-spheres with unique properties were developed. Silica nano-spheres containing immobilized silver or copper nanoparticles of narrow particle size distribution were also synthesised. All these types of silica nano-spheres can be applied as nano-fillers for polymer nano-composites in the purpose to achieve better thermal, mechanical, barrier and antimicrobial properties. The other example of multifunctional fillers application is polymer composites ceramizing at high temperature arising during fire.
