Glass ceramic sealants, which are potentially suitable to be used in SOFC stacks, are analyzed with respect to their reaction behaviour with high chromium containing ferritic steel. The investigated glass composition is a multicomponent glass of the major system of BaO-CaO-AI_2O_3-SiO_2. Apart from the exposure of steel samples, which were coated on one side with glass and exposed in humidified argon hydrogen atmosphere (Ar - 4 % H_2 - 2 % H_2O) at 800 ℃, also exposure with sandwiched samples of two steel plates joined with glass were investigated under dual atmosphere (inside H_2 - 3 % H_2O, outside air) and air. The compatibility between steel and glass strongly depended on glass composition. These differences in behaviour may have a pure chemical reason or are related to differences in crystallisation behaviour.
