The aim of this study was to develop a methodology of treatment, acquisition, processing and image analysis able to obtain the degree of structural banding of semi-finished metallic products, completely automated and reliable. Five samples of a low carbon alloy steel AISI 8620, with different degrees of structural banding, were studied. The microstructural evaluation was carried out in an automatic analyser image system, belonging to the two different Brazilian research centers involved in the present work. With the results obtained, it will be possible to assist the demand of the consuming market, leading to results free of subjective interpretations, with an answer time much smaller than that requested when is used conventional techniques.
