As finite element simulation of the die compaction process becomes accepted as an important design tool for the PM industry, the need for improved starting data is becoming apparent. An important but poorly understood parameter is the fill density distribution in the die. AMES has carried out a study of the effect of die geometry and filling strategy on fill density distribution using a specially constructed devide which allows the measurement of density distributions in a set of mock dies of different dimensions. The results of finite element simulations starting both with a uniform fill density and with modified fill density distributions based on the results of the study are presented in comparison with experiment.
