Cemented carbides are industrially manufactured in a multitude of variants, each with a specific composition chosen to give the most favourable properties of the end product. However, both densification and microstructure evolution during sintering are influenced by the alloy composition. Understanding the sintering process is therefore one of the keys to alloy design. In this work, a spectrum of WC-Co cemented carbide alloys have been sintered under various free sintering conditions and under uniaxial load. The densification has been analysed in context of the stages traditionally attributed to liquid phase sintering. Constitutive equations that account for variations in chemical composition, carbide grain size and grain size distribution, are outlined.
