Applications for Diamond Coated Hardmetal Tools

摘要

The intensive research on diamond coatings finally resulted in solutions for the adhesion problems of diamond coatings on hardmetal substrates. Sophisticated pre-treatments significantly increased the adhesion of the diamond coatings, and subsequently the tool performance. So far machining of graphite was the main application for diamond coated tools. The current developments offer opportunities for machining of novel composite materials like AlSi alloys, fiber reinforced plastics and Metal Matrix Compounds (MMC). This article reviews the requirements for machining of the before mentioned materials and the performance of diamond coated tools will be presented. By comparing data from practical tests the developments of applicable diamond tools will be discussed.
