Coastline detection in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image plays an important role in marine applications. Level set algorithm has been one of the major algorithms in contour detection due to its detection effectiveness and quality of anti-noise. However, when level set algorithm is applied to high resolution image, it will cost a lot of time for contour detection because of its complicated iterative manner. This paper presents an improved method based on level set algorithm, aiming at SAR image. Firstly, the coarse boundary is obtained by level set algorithm in low resolution image. Then, the contour is processed finely by level set algorithm in high resolution image based of the coarse boundary. This method can speed up the detection without loss of detection effectiveness.
