Mass saving is getting more and more driving in spaceprograms pushing to develop new technologies mainlyconcerning the adoption of new materials andstructural solutions. Coarse Pointing Device (CPD) isan example of a applications of new concepts tomanned missions.The Coarse Pointing Device is a cardanic platformrotating around two axes to compensate the ISS orbitalmotion and the orbital plane drift. The rotation isobtained via a couple of brushless motors controlled inthe angular position via incremental rotary encoders.The CPD will be launched with the Space Shuttle andwill be mounted on the Columbus Platform as anexternal payload. The re-entry is foreseen after amission of 1.5 years. A further mission will be possiblefollowing dedicated refurbishment activities.
