Chitosan is a biocompatible natural polysaccharide broadly used in versatile biomedical applications like tissue engineering and wound healing. In spite of its favourable features including non-antigenic, non-toxic and capability of processed into porous structures; rapid swelling in aqueous solutions makes it mechanically weak and unstable. Recent experiments indicate that using alginate, an anionic biodegradable polymer, increase the mechanical properties in chitosan-alginate(C-A) scaffolds. For the first time in this study, gelatine which is a biodegradable, non-immunogenic protein containing Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD)-like sequence is immobilized on C-A film by chemical method to achieve a more bioactive and potentially suitable matrix for cell adhesion and migration.
