Biomaterials are showing potential in bone regeneration and functional bioactive scaffolds would generate big difference for many patients. However, the material must be carefully designed in order to obtain good results; the scaffolds should give the right cell stimulation and have the right mechanical properties. Additionally, the polymerization process should generate non-toxic polymers that eventually will degrade. One problem with present scaffolds is that they are often lacking in mechanical properties and structural stability in part and the aim of this work was therefore to increase the mechanical properties, biocompatibility and the bioactivity of three-dimensional porous scaffolds to be used in bone-regeneration.
