In order to face the fossil fuel crisis and the global warming, biofuels are developed worldwide sincethe few last decades. Due to many disadvantages of the first generation biofuel, a second generation is developed,whose major advantage is to use the lignocellulosic part of plants. One possible BtL (biomass to liquid) chainincludes a gasification followed by a Fisher-Tropsch synthesis. In this process, a pre-treatment is needed to improvebiomass grindability since fine particles with low aspect ratio are required to supply the gasifier. Mild pyrolysis(temperature level below 300℃) allows a good compromise between grindability and loss of energy content to beobtained. This present work proposes a mechanical characterization (grindability analysis) of wood (Fagus silvatica)treated with different extents of treatment. An original impact device was used for this characterization.
