FUNDAMENTAL EXAMINATION OF HCI GUIDELINES

HCI guidelines are intended to assist designers, smooth the progress of designing and improve the quality and consistency of interface components. Although these guidelines, standards and style guides are widely accepted by user interface designers, users often still experience problems while interacting with an interface. Therefore it can be concluded that guidelines and standards do not always provide suitable guidance on different features of interface design. The vast majority of the available HCI guidelines are typically based on either past experience or best practice and the experimental evidence is rare. In this study, an attempt has been made to empirically verify some of the available recommendations on use of colour, text style and text size in interfaces. Three simple interfaces were designed to subjectively analyze the recommended effective colour combinations, optimum number of colours used in a page, text size and text style. The result of the experiment shows that some of the "recommended" guidelines might cause usability issues for the users and could be enhanced.
