The changing role of electronics in the automotive vehicle with emphasis on fuel cell based vehicles

Electronics in automotive vehicles has changed radically over the last twenty years, and will continue to change. With the development of electric hybrid and fuel cell powered vehicles, electronics will play an ever-increasing part in the realisation of these vehicles. This paper describes the changes in the electrical system architecture as the vehicle becomes more electric based and focuses on the disciplines that will be needed to develop vehicles of this type. The paper also discusses systems that will need to be redesigned to operate from a totally electrical power plant and outlines the issues that need to be addressed when making these changes. The paper concludes by describing how the role of the automotive electronics engineer will change in the future and how vehicle manufactures and first tier suppliers need to invest in a new type of electronics engineer to meet the needs of future vehicle design.
