River flow may be used to provide an estimate of the dilution capacity of a watercourse receiving industrial or domestic wastewaters, and a prior knowledge of this can be used in conjunction with quality estimates to assess the amount of effluent treatment required to minimise environmental impact whilst avoiding unnecessary expenditure due to over-treatment. A study has been made of the applicability of artificial neural network modelling to the short-term prediction of river flow for the River Dee in Wales.
