Nanotechnology is the creation of new materials, and systems at the molecular level with significantly improved structural, and other properties. A futuristic bridge has been proposed using advanced composites [e.g. nano-composites] with sensing and control elements, self-healing materials, anti-graffiti and self-cleaning surfaces, smart paint, geothermal energy [to de-ice bridge decks], seismic design and other features. A preliminary design of this has appeared in the USA Today based on the interview with the first author. Research opportunities and challenges in mechanics and materials, including nano-mechanics, carbon nano-tubes, bio-inspired materials, coatings, fire-resistant materials as well as improved engineering and design of materials are presented and discussed.
