Nanotechnology in Drug Targeted Therapy: Bridging the gap between molecular and cellular science

Recent years brought about a pervasive interest in the potential applications of nanotechnology for the therapy of human diseases. The nanotechnology potential for targeted drug delivery, patient-tailored treatment and reduced side effects, brings hope for patients suffering of disorders. However, regulatory and development considerations, including properties of the components, reproducible manufacturing and appropriate characterization methods, as well as nanoparticles safety and efficacy are critical and challenging for regulatory approval and rapid marketing of the new products. The recent advances in targeted brain therapy using nanotechnologies and highlights of the pharmaceutical development challenges that must be overcome in order to fill the gap existing between the promising bench trials and the successful bedside applications will be discussed.
