This paper outlines the development of hedge trimmers carried out by South Bank University in collaboration with Balck and Decker. The probject commenced with a Quality Function Depolyment exercise. The results drove group design project priorities. Algthough the hedge trimmer is a mature product with a relatively static concept, this redesign process has developed the prudct in a new direction. Although a product may be perceived as mature and as a relatively static concept there may be scope for conceptual development. The product conept may be developed through the use of QED-led processes, evolving into a new concept perception.
