Polymer matrix composite materials are being considered for expanded roles as primary structural components in advanced gas turbine engines to increase performance and save weight. Large diameter engine cases in high bypass ratio systems lead themselves to composite application, and technology programs have been established to develop composite case design methodologies. Perhaps the most critical ingredient in case design is providing structurally effective and efficient radial flange joints. Thus, a major program element was dedicated to developing and validating design, analysis, and fabrication techniques for compsite radial flanges.
