Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and benefi ciation business in the Exxaro Sands Division,rnand operates along the West Coast of South Africa (see Figure 1). The business encompasses mining,rnmineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations.rnInfl ated commodity prices and increasing operating costs demands greater attention to thernmanagement of process performance and the company wide coordination of resources. Consequently,rnthe task of deploying operational/technical skills and budgets into the most appropriate parts of thernbusiness assumes great importance in order to increase productivity from its capital assets. The mineralrnsands industry is under the same sort of economic scrutiny that all other industries fi nd themselves,rnand as such, Exxaro – Namakwa Sands has taken the strategic initiative to improve overall resourcernutilisation within the processing steps and to measure the costs associated with obtaining this value.rnThis paper provides details of the successful implementation of a Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) atrnNamakwa Sands to recover primary and secondary zircon products from the wet gravity (quartz) rejectsrngenerated and stockpiled at the Mineral Separation plant (MSP).
