Water is becoming a scarce commodity and simple but effective methods need to be developed for its purification,without the use of toxic chemicals.A study was carried out over 40 months at the University of the Ryukyus,Okinawa,to evaluate the impact of the technology of Effective Microorganisms in treating the polluted waters of the Senbaru pond,lying within the campus premises.The degree of eutrophication is excessive,due to the pond receiving polluted grey waters and even sewage from the neighboring areas. The study applied EM over a period of 40 months,at two week intervals.In addition a small dam was built at the top of the inlet stream to facilitate ease of inoculation.The results obtained on a qualitative basis showed that the foul odor disappeared within a very short period of time and the sludge was reduced significantly.Thebiodiversity was enhanced in the Senbaru pond and lower sections of the canal.Escherichia coli could not be detected in the lower sections of the canal.The study clearly and qualitatively highlighted the potential of treating polluted waters and waterways with EM and the need for quantifying results is stressed.
