A new type of zwitterionic chromophores having unusually large hyperpolarizabilities were synthesized and incorporated into host polymers to yield NLO polymers that have good film-forming ability, can be easily poled and exhibited very large EO coefficients. Correlation studies between EO activities of poled polymers and the polymer structures and thermal properties found that the chain flexibility and topology of NLO polymers played an important role in the thermo-electrical poling process. The introduction of BCBO cross-linking group was proven to be effective in preventing the dipole relaxation in poled polymers. Excellent temporal stability of poling-induced EO responses at 85℃ was found for all poled polymers.
