RESULTS FROM THE SWEDISH MONITORING OF PCDD/F AND DIOXIN-LIKE PCBs IN FOODSTUFF 2006-2008

Sweden started a monitoring programme for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in foodstuffs in 2003. Since then, monitoring in Sweden follows the recommendations and requirements laid down by the European Commission. The Swedish monitoring of PCDD/F and dioxin-like PCBs 2006-2008 provides data from analyses of 244 samples from different categories of foodstuffs (including 14 follow up samples and two samples that were sampled due to suspicions of high dioxin levels). The monitoring shows that the level of contamination is low in most foodstuffs. Some outliers of liver, horse, mackerel and lamb meat were found and further investigations in these cases were or are planned to be carried out. Samples of herring and sprat from the Baltic Sea contained high levels of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs. Fatty fish from the Baltic Region generally shows higher levels of these substances than fish from other areas. However, based on the fact that Sweden and Finland have dietary recommendations for fish consumption from the Baltic Region, these countries have derogation from the maximum levels and are authorized to put fatty fish on their own markets.
