THE FINGERPRINT OF CHLORINATED AROMATIC COMPOUNDS IN CONTAMINATED SITES FROM CHLORALKALI PROCESSES AND A HISTORIC CHLORINE PRODUCTION USING GC-HR-TOF-MS SCREENING

Soils from two highly PCDD/PCDF contaminated sites from former chloralkali processes using graphite electrodes (Tokyo/Japan and Rheinfelden/Germany) and from a former Leblanc factory with an adjacent chlorine production (Lampertheim/Germany) where screened with GC-HR-TOF-MS for halogenated aromatic pollutants. At all three sites the full range of Stockholm Convention UPOPs (PCDF, PCDD, PCB, HCBz and PeCBzA) were.present at high ppb levels (and TEQ up to several 100,000 ng/kg soil at hot spot areas for each site). Additionally, a wide range of other polychlorinated PAHs (PC-Phenanthrene/Anthracene, PCPyrene/ Fluoranthene, PC-Benzo(a)anthracene/Chrysene) were detected at even higher levels than PCDF. Furthermore, polychlorinated methyl-dibenzofurans, polychlorinated dimethyl-/ethyl- dibenzofurans (Dimethyl- /ethyl-PCDF) and polychlorinated carbazoles – the N-analogue of dibenzofuran - were detected at all three sites. The toxicity of these polychlorinated PAH and hetero-PAH are unknown. These complex POPs mixtures were present at all three sites, suggesting that for these and similar contaminated site types from the chlorine industry a comprehensive toxicity evaluation and risk assessment would be warranted.
