PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and practical method for degrading a highly chlorine-substituted aromatic organochlorine compound, to provide a method for accumulating bacteria degrading the same, and to provide a method for isolating the bacteria using the above method. PSOLUTION: The method for degrading the highly chlorine-substituted aromatic organochlorine compound comprises the following process. An accumulated product obtained by making soil in a reduced condition act on a solution(I) containing a highly chlorine-substituted aromatic organochlorine compound as the sole terminal electron acceptor and a plurality of organic acids as electron donors is made to act on a solution(II) containing a highly chlorine-substituted aromatic organochlorine compound as the sole terminal electron acceptor and an organic acid as an electron donor to form an accumulated product(II), which is then reacted at 30-50C under anaerobic conditions in a system containing the highly chlorine-substituted aromatic organochlorine compounds.
