The wood preserving industry began operations in the United States in the late 1800's. The age of the industry predates modern environmental laws, and the negative environmental legacy associated with the long operating history resulted in a specific focus on the industry as environmental laws and regulations were developed. The wood preserving industry is now subject to a variety of environmental laws and regulations concerning air, water, wastes, pesticides, community awareness, and remediation of historic contamination.rnThis chapter will briefly explain the regulatory programs potentially affecting the industry.
