Tissue-mimicking phantoms play a critical role in the development and validation of optical tissue-interrogation modalities. Tissue phantoms may be used in validation of a technology's accuracy, for relating raw spectral information to quantitative optical properties, or for calibration or standardization of measurements across instruments or institutions. However, challenges exist, particularly with the use of liquid biological phantoms and techniques for accurate and repeatable system calibration. In this paper, we will discuss the use of phantoms in our laboratories for technology development and standardization, and will share the methods, techniques, and technologies we have developed to address these challenges.
