SUPER AND MEGA YACHTS - REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

The paper explains the regulations applicable to yachts of 500GRT and above. The UK Maritime and CoastguardrnAgency’s LY2 code can be applied to yachts up to 3000GRT carrying not more than 12 passengers. For yachts abovernthis size the option is to certify the yacht as either a cargo ship or a passenger ship. The implications of these choices arernexplained in the paper. Recent amendments to SOLAS 2009 and MARPOL give rise to probabilistic damage stabilityrnfor passenger ships and the requirement for protective location of fuel oil tanks for ships carrying more than 600m~3. Therneffects of these new regulations are demonstrated with two examples. Upcoming regulations are also discussed.
