Super and Mega yachts are growing in size and sophistication whilst electric propulsion is increasingly being offered for smaller and more specialist vessels. This paper examines the latest technology in electric power supply and propulsion systems that could be used in such yachts and explores the opportunities this may enable for ship designsand operation.rnThere are a range of electric power & propulsion solutions for a wide number of vessels from small research vessels to cruise ships. New technologies such as compact induction and High Temperature Super-conducting (HTS) machines developed for naval and other specialist vessels offer high power density and low noise & vibration advantages with the potential for a reduced number of prime movers, which may make them suitable for the next generation of yachts. This paper will analyse these technologies to establish acceptable solutions for the constrained scantlings of these yachts and explore the financial and operational benefits such as improved comfort and performance that they may give. Based on recent studies this paper will propose power and propulsion configurations that could be used by future designers and owners to understand to what type of Super and Mega yachts this technology may be applied.
