Super and Mega yachts are growing in size and sophistication whilst electric propulsion is increasingly being offered forrnsmaller and more specialist vessels. This paper examines the latest technology in electric power supply and propulsionrnsystems that could be used in such yachts and explores the opportunities this may enable for ship designs and operation.rnThere are a range of electric power & propulsion solutions for a wide number of vessels from small research vessels torncruise ships. New technologies such as compact induction and High Temperature Super-conducting (HTS) machinesrndeveloped for naval and other specialist vessels offer high power density and low noise & vibration advantages with thernpotential for a reduced number of prime movers, which may make them suitable for the next generation of yachts. Thisrnpaper will analyse these technologies to establish acceptable solutions for the constrained scantlings of these yachts andrnexplore the financial and operational benefits such as improved comfort and performance that they may give.rnBased on recent studies this paper will propose power and propulsion configurations that could be used by futurerndesigners and owners to understand to what type of Super and Mega yachts this technology may be applied.
