There has been a growing demand for many years in the engineering sector to move away from traditional methods of teaching and to develop common intelligent online training environments, which are flexible, collaborative, interactive and allow the dynamic real-time capturing, modeling, sharing and more importantly the utilization of engineering knowledge across the enterprise, where the enterprise workforce are provided with capabilities not only to share their knowledge on real-case engineering problems and solutions, but to provide innovative 'what if scenario based training. Traditional training methods of either class-room based, which are constrained to geographical location and the individual knowledge of the trainer, or, online teachings, based on traditional web-based media, with restricted IT systems fails to deliver the require flexibility to share and utilize enable the knowledge across the enterprise. The emergence of technologies and techniques such as Knowledge Base Engineering (KBE), Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Serious Game environments and Semantic technologies. This paper will review the training methods and outline the challenges faced by the engineering industry to enhance the quality of their training and provide the necessary mechanism to maintain and grow the skill sets of their enterprise's workforce, regardless of their geographical location, or technological capabilities in the context of an intelligent virtual learning environment (VLE) platform using KBE systems.
