Expediting exploration: how industry leaders deliver large datasets for rapid analysis

The use of large three-dimensional seismic datasets in oil and gas exploration puts enormous strain on traditional data storage and delivery systems. This paper analyzes the factors that contribute to the growth of large seismic datasets, and presents strategies being successfully implemented by large international oil and gas organizations, including the Shengli Geophysical Research Institute, to transfer and deliver these volumes between geotechnical professionals in processing and interpretation environments. Best practices and procedures for capacity planning for the continuing expansion of these datasets are described, based on seismic data management implementations at over 50 organizations in major oil and gas exploration locations around the world. The strategies include hierarchical storage management (HSM), near line tape robotic systems, and web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) interfaces as a tool for submitting custom seismic processing flows and automatic loading from processing systems to workstation interpretation projects. Effective implementation of these strategies allows large exploration organizations to effectively deliver seismic data through the life cycle of their exploration and production projects, and reduce cycle time to first production.
