LEARNING LESSONS THE HARD OR SOFT WAY, THAT IS THE QUESTION

With the increasing prevalence of computers and computer processing in the workplace the opportunity exists for savings in time and money through knowledge reuse. Currently most engineering reports are almost considered to be throwaway documents, assembled for only a short attention span. One method of ensuring knowledge reuse is in the initial distribution of the reports; reports are more easily accessed and distributed in electronic format. Additionally reports designed for electronic distribution can be easily kept up-to-date. The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) Knowledge Based System (KBS) and Corrosion Surveillance Information Module apply these principles in the form of prototypes demonstrating the feasibility and utility of knowledge reuse and electronic distribution.
