The most widely used inhibitors in water treatment systems have been those based on chromate and nitrite ions, however, both these chemical species are known to be potentially hazardous to human health and the environment. Two rare earth-carboxylate compounds have been tested, Ce(Salicylate)3(H_2O)_9 and Ce(Anthranilate)_3(H_2O)_3, and Ce(Salicylate)_3(H_2O)_9 was found to exhibit significant corrosion inhibition at low concentrations for mild steel in neutral conditions. The compound appears to behave as a mixed inhibitor with both anodic and cathodic reactions suppressed.
