This paper deals with the possible mechanisms leading to typical failures like: cracking, flaking or blistering on exterior wood coatings. Existing data from various studies will be further analysed in a meta-analysis. Relations between mechanical and hygrothermal properties of coatings and mechanisms of failure will be discussed. Also, the differences in hygroscopic expansion between coating and wood will be considered in relation to development of stress in a coating. Finally, the paper will suggest future directions for research focussing on understanding the occurrence of coating failure on wooden substrates and how to improve the durability.
