Over the past 30 years, vinyl manufacturing has increased 10-fold. It is now the second largest volume plastic produced in the world, exceeded only by polyethylene, The majority of this vinyl is slated for long-life applications, such as pipe, siding and windows. Sixty to 70 per cent of all vinyl production is slated for the building and construction industry.rnWithin this industry, the vinyl manufacturers recycle almost 100 per cent of their in-plant vinyl production scrap. There is, however, virtually no recycling of vinyl installation scrap (which is generated during renovation or new construction installations) and no recycling of post-consumer vinyl (in part, because of the longevity of the material). Although there is relatively little post-consumer vinyl currently in the waste stream, the expectation is that there will be significant growth over the next few years in the quantity of vinyl products that will have reached the end of their life span.
