Radial profiles of the Hg excited states densities in a narrow electrodeless mercury-argon discharge

The nowadays development of the narrow low pressure Hg-Ar lamps for LCD panels backlighting and disinfection purposes reveals a certain lack of experimental and theoretical data on this subject. Special interest from the consideration of the lifetime and radiative power is focused to ectrodeless lamps excited by high frequency discharges. Previously a significant amount of efforts was invested into studying and optimization of the conventional fluorescent light source based on low pressure Hg-Ar discharges. However it appears that for narrower tubes (with inner diameter of approx 5 mm and less) the scaling and similarity considerations can not be applied automatically. Important information clarifying mechanisms of excitation and giving a basis for optimization for such a lamp can be derived from measurements of the Hg excited states densities. Moreover, for adequate modelling of the ultraviolet radiation efficiency the knowledge about the slope of the radial profile of the resonance 6~3P_1 level density can be essential. In this work we present our result of the measurements of Hg 6~3P_1 and 6~3P_2 radial profiles performed with the hook method.
