PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device for a microwave electrodeless discharge lamp having high luminescent efficiency.;SOLUTION: A magnetron 1 generating microwave is coupled to a waveguide 3 for transferring microwave in a low loss, and the waveguide 3 is coupled via a coupling hole 4 to a cavity resonator 5. A bulb 6 composed of airtight quartz is disposed nearly at the center of the cavity resonator 5 having a relatively high electric field intensity distribution, and mounted on a supporting pole 7 composed of quartz fixed to the bottom of the side face 5a of the cavity resonator 5. The bulb has a diameter of 27 mm. In the interior of the bulb enclosed are rare gas argon Ar of 30 Torr, mercury Hg of 40 mg, the cerium iodide CeI₃ or 5 mg and sodium iodide NaI of 10 mg, and the molar ratio of the luminescent material cerium Ce to the same sodium Na is about 1 to 7.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
