This nonspatial filtering system is superior to previous designs; since only a single hologram is required, and the system is simpler to align and adjust than the two hologram system. In actual operation, the hologram and retro-reflecting means will be housed together in a small, self-contained unit. . With proper hologram and retro-reflector angles, both the input and the output beam can be made parallel to the optical table, but with a substantial angle (20°) between them to facilitate separation.. This is a substantial improvement over the two hologram configuration where the output beam is at a significant angle with respect to the table.
