During the last decade the research activity concerning photonic crystals has expanded dramatically. After the introduction of the concept in 1987, basic research, theoretical as well as laboratory scale experimental activities, have clarified the issues and demonstrated potential for development in many directions. Among the applications, most attention has been given to the possibilities to improve optical communication systems by low loss fibres and high efficiency light diodes. Significantly less has been published about the application of photonic bandgaps for emission control. Because of the military interest for this subject, it is difficult to judge whether this implies lower research activity or clearance difficulties.
