Integration of Teleconsultation Workstations in a PACS for Intra- Hospital Applications

There are about 30/mon consultation meetings held in Huadong Hospital in Shanghai for senior and VIP patients. In order to move to digital imaging based radiology practice in the radiology department, and also provide more efficient clinical services, we built a PACS connecting to the DICOM conformance modalities. The specially designed teleconsultation workstations were installed in the radiology department and clinical departments for better consultation services. The images generated from the modalities were sent from PACS server to these workstations following normal PACS image data flow. Both clinical physicians and radiologists used these teleconsultation display workstations for imaging viewing, as well as for real time consultation meetings, which provide synchronous mechanism in image processing and manipulation. With these display workstations, the either side of physicians located in clinical departments, or the radiologists in radiology department can synchronize their activities on the displayed images to obtain "I-see-what-you-see", and "you-see-what-I-am-doing" fashions. With these facilities, both radiologists and clinical physicians can interactively manipulate the reviewed images to achieve improved mutual understanding of the ramification of given cases.
