Evaluating the Stiffness Modulus of Highway Materials from the Geogauge Device

This paper evaluates the potential use of the Geogauge test device to reliably measure the in-situ stiffness characteristics of highway materials and embankments. To assess this, both laboratory and field testing programs were conducted. The laboratory tests were conducted on different materials prepared inside two test boxes (5ft x 3ft x 3ft) located in GERL lab at Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC). While the field tests were conducted on several highway sections selected from different highway projects. In addition, nine sections were constructed and tested at the LA-DOTD Pavement Research Facility (PRF) site. The testing program included conducting Geogauge tests, in addition to the static Plate Load Test (PLT) that was used as a reference test. The Geogauge stiffness modulus obtained from laboratory and field tests was correlated with PLT moduli, and good correlations were obtained. The results of this study suggest that the Geogauge can be a promising tool for in-situ measuring the stiffness of highway materials and embankments.
