This paper discusses a novel technique for obtaining water samples at varying depths using a results which accurately assess the vertical contamination profile of dissolved volatile organics in ground water. The technique involves lowering a sampling bottle to the appropriate depth in a well and, by a simple mechanical device, filling the bottle with groundwater. The sample is then subitted to field headspace analysis using a portable GC and total assessment of the ground water quality is achieved in real time. Studies using this technique will be discussed and evidence will be presented to justify this approach as a simple cost-effective replacement of the conventional well-purging practice. Some observations on the relevance of this type of data to remediation strategy will also be discussed.
