This invention regards the method of estimating the pollution of the hydrocarbon sample by the filtrate water of the oil based mud water. This method includes with the step which is analyzed the step which obtains the hydrocarbon sample which was polluted by the filtrate water of the oil based mud water and, two dimensional gas chromatography (CG CG) of making use the hydrocarbon sample which was polluted next. This method furthermore, includes the step which identifies the specific component or the tracer of one or more of the oil based mud water in the hydrocarbon sample which was polluted.
