Updating the International Standards for Simulator Qualification The Draft ICAO Manual 2nd Edition

In March 2001, an international industry working group convened to revise the International Standards for flight simulator qualification contained in the ICAO document 9625, "Manual of Criteria for the Qualification of Flight Simulators". The working group was co-sponsored by the European Joint Aviation Authorities and the US Federal Aviation Administration and was endorsed by the Royal Aeronautical Society. The larger group was divided into four subgroups that were tasked with revising the data, visual, motion and sound standards, respectively. The working group met one more time in June 2001, and after consolidation and editing, the draft 2nd Edition of the ICAO Manual was submitted to ICAO in November of that year for publication. This paper provides an overview of the purpose for the revision and the process used to develop the revised standards with a more detailed discussion on improvements that were made to the data standards; i.e., those that relate directly to modeling and validation of simulator performance and handling qualities characteristics.
